TRAVELLING WITH DIABETES
I am a Type 1 diabetic, and always carried some kind of snack with me. “I didn’t eat my granola bar until I was really starting to crash. The next thing I knew, I woke up in an ambulance heading to Beth Israel Hospital. In the emergency room, the doctors explained that I had bitten my tongue when I passed out, and that’s why my mouth felt so strange. When my father arrived, the doctor walked him through exactly what had happened to me and how he should "keep an eye on me"

Editor: What if this lady had been in a non English speaking country & had one glass of wine to drink prior to the event. She could have been labelled a comatose drunk and left to sleep it of – and probably die!! MyHealth Alert was essential

Fallen in a Foreign Country and I Can't Get Up!
By: Mary Hollendoner Dec 2006

THE SCENE
(A) BUS ACCIDENT

Picture it…. You take off to Asia for a year of backpacking and adventure full of excitement and exuberance. You take a bus out of Bangkok, your heart in your throat each time the suicidal driver passes on a blind bend and honks at oncoming traffic as they "get in his way." Turning one blind bend an oncoming truck doesn't swerve out of the way and the next thing you know you're lying under a pile of twisted metal amidst the screaming, crying and shouting of foreign voices. You are injured, alone, don't speak the language, and have no idea what the medical procedures in this country are like. What do you do?

Editor:
(a) Have you got your emergency MyHealth Alert ™ card with you?
(b) Do the medical personnel you are going to meet know your pre-existing medical problems?

My name is Francis Kovacevic and I have been a diabetic for the past
17 years. In the last 7 years I have been rushed to hospital 6 times with “life
and death” situations, not being conscious when the ambulance
arrives and it is very difficult to relay my problems to doctors,
fortunately for me one of my daughters was able to be located on
all occasions (how lucky am I.)

If I had ‘MyHealth Alert’ card, then there would be no delay in diagnosing my problems or wasting time trying to contact a family member to get information on my health. Without the card a diabetic coma situation could be fatal for me.

I believe that ‘MyHealthAlert’ card would be beneficial to
everyone who has an illness and needs immediate treatment by
ambulance officers and doctors - I believe this is a
LIFE SAVING DEVICE.

Why push your luck when danger can be so easily avoided.

Francis Kovacevic
